A1 Grand Prix - The Car Specs And Interesting Facts

A technical look at the cars taking part in the A1 Grand Prix Of Nations - keeping in mind that they are all kept to the exact same standards in engines and aerodynamics to level the playing field.

For some pictures of the A1 GP cars and for the latest race reviews cli ck here.

The look of the car itself was inspired by what Sheikh Maktoum regards as a good looking race car. Hey, if you’re the boss then they have to listen to you, right?

Also very much at the front of developer’s minds was the need for excitement in the sport in the form of overtaking; a problem with cars at high speeds with high downforce. What happens, generally speaking, is a very high volume of dirty air (by dirty air I mean unstable and not unclean) is flung out behind the car generating the high downforce. This means the car immediately behind loses downforce and this in turn makes it very difficult for passing as the vehicle following becomes difficult to handle. What the developers of the A1 GP cars have created is a car that creates a very small pocket of dirty air and at the same time engineered the front wing in a way that would allow close following and therefore a lot of passing to happen throughout a race.

The chassis is made and designed by Lola International and is made up of a core of aluminium honeycomb surrounded by a carbon fibre skin. This results in a one-piece safety cell tub which has proven to be incredibly resistant to twisting (a good thing).

The Vital Statistics:

Weight: About 600kg

Gearbox: 6-speed sequential with paddle-shift

Engine Size: litre V8

Valve-Train:H Cams and 4 valves per cylinder

Max Power:

Fuel Tank: 135 litres

Another addition to the cars to create exciting racing is the Powerboost: This is a driver-activated system which boosts the car to it’s maximum of 550bhp at the touch of a button. Each driver has a limited number of times he can use this option (about 8 times in a feature race) and once he has activated it it will stay at the boosted power until he lifts his foot off the accelerator. This has to make for some exciting passes and surely some great defensive manoeuvres as well!

Buying Discount Baseball Bats

Whether you want a traditional wood baseball bat or a new, high-tech metal bat, there is a wide selection of discount baseball bats available. A baseball bat is a vital piece of equipment and its quality can greatly impact a player’s performance, so it is no surprise that many people are willing to pay a premium. Luckily, you can get a high-tech, top quality bat at discount prices. Discount baseball bats are available at most sporting equipment outlets, and especially at online stores.

Brand new aluminum baseball bats cost usually start at $200 and go up from there. Prices increase as technology introduces stronger and lighter materials. By crafting baseball bat barrels with cutting-edge metal alloys, manufacturers like Easton and Demarini arm batters with power while maintaining a quick, lightweight feel.

Discount baseball bats are abundantly available online. In many cases, online stores can offer discount baseball bats at great prices because there is less overhead than at a sporting goods store and, in many cases, there is no sales tax or shipping charged. When you shop for baseball bats online you have access to a vast and easily accessible selection user product reviews to help you get a feel for which bats are best for you, and also can save a great deal of time.

Don’t forget to check out blemished baseball bats. This little secret can save you 30 to 70 percent. Many baseball bat dealers offer blemished baseball bats at severely slashed prices due to a cosmetic imperfection such as chipped paint. Lucky for you, the baseball bat’s performance is untouched, but the price is hacked down significantly. Blemished baseball bats are available at many outlets and online. With a little looking, it is not that difficult to find a bat that offers premium performance at a reasonable price.

Go Carts - A Heart-Pumping Thrill!

Are you ready for some excitement? Start racing go carts for the ultimate thrill!

The thrill of sharply skidding around a blind corner in your go cart is an experience that is hard to surpass. Racing down the track in one of your speedy go carts, maneuvering around curves and slower gocart drivers, is fun at its best. Pressing down hard on the accelerator as you pass by slower drivers is about as thrilling as it gets. It’s just too bad not everyone can experience the fun and excitement of go carting.

The smell of the dirt track and the distinct aroma of the gas and oil burning in the gocart engine is enough to excite any enthusiast, even when watching from the stands. If you’ve ever watched an Indy Car or Formula One race in person or on TV you know how exciting it can be. But imagine climbing into one of those off road or racing gocarts yourself. Starting out slow, taking out to the track, the anticipation is almost unbearable. But then, once on the track, you press the accelerator on your gocart to the floor, feeling an immediate thrust forward, and your adrenaline pumping just as fast. What a thrill. Go carts can’t be beat.

Go carts are how you can experience the thrill of Formula One racing without the danger. At least with the beginner go carts. And if you’re really serious, it’s a good way to get started toward a career in professional racing. Once you master driving go carts it’s time to take the next step into the arena of professional racing. But if you’re not quite so brave remaining in a go cart can still be exciting.

Go carts are geared toward beginners in either off road or paved track racing. Beginner go carts are easy to drive and control. And if you do lose control there are usually not serious consequences to deal with afterward. No, it’s just plain fun racing go carts. Go carting is a simplified version of Indy Car or Formula One racing. But like anything else there are different levels that you can become involved in.

>From total beginners at amusement parks and fun centers to professional go cart racing. From the least experienced drivers to ones that are training to become professional drivers. You can choose your own competition. No need to get involved over your head. The main objective is to have fun. And once you get into your own go cart, no matter what level you are competing in, the fun just never ends.

Once you get addicted to go carting there is no limit as to what you can do. You can purchase a brand new gocart ready for racing, or you can buy inexpensive kits and build your own gocarts. Installing rack and pinion steering to changing tires will become easy over time. Or how about the installation of a brand new engine designed for improving the speed of go carts? Maybe you’ll be after a brand new frame that will be the envy of all around. Perhaps you’ll want to get into electric go carts instead of gas powered go carts. The way gas prices are climbing these days that might be a good idea.

But the bottom line is this: speed is where the excitement comes in. And these go carts can reach speeds up to 90 MPH or more. That’s fast. But once again, there is no need to start getting nervous just yet. There are opportunities for thrills at every level. You don’t need to go 80 MPH to experience a thrilling ride. So if you’ve ever thought about getting involved with go carts it’s never too late and you’re never too old. Go out and experience the thrill of go carting now.

What Are Hard Style and Soft Style Martial Arts?

Sometimes one would see references to ‘hard’ style and ’soft’ style martial arts. To many non-martial artists, these terms may be puzzling. In North America, these terms are used to classify martial art styles into two main categories. Japanese/Okinawan karate and Korean tae kwon do are generally referred to as hard styles. Movements in both karate and tae kwon do are often linear with their forms (traditional sequence of set moves) performed with crisp movements. Chinese kung fu styles are usually referred to as soft styles. The circular motions of kung fu forms give them a more visually graceful or softer appearance especially when many of the movements flow from one to another. Even Korean kuk sool won which is sometimes referred to as ‘Korean kung fu’, is often classified as a soft style since its movements are also more flowing than the stop and go of tae kwon do or karate. This is not to say that hard styles such as karate or tae kwon do are more powerful martial arts than kung fu and other soft styles. The term ’soft’ is a bit misleading because the power from circular kung fu moves are often hidden. Circular moves can generate just as much power as linear ones.

The terms hard style and soft style came as a result of the evolution of North American martial arts competitions, particularly in forms divisions. For many years, open karate tournaments which allowed all martial arts styles, had competitors from different martial arts backgrounds compete in the same forms divisions. All equivalent level competitors, whether they used a Japanese/Okinawan karate kata, a Korean tae kwon do pattern or a Chinese kung fu form, competed together in the same divisions. This provided a nice martial arts showcase for spectators especially at the bigger tournaments. However, some competitors and judges considered divisions with combined styles to be too complicated. For example, judges who were familiar with only Japanese or Korean styles had a difficult time scoring competitors performing Chinese kung fu forms. Sometimes competitors from different martial art styles felt that judges were being biased against them. Judging a hard style form against a soft style form was often like trying to compare apples to oranges.

To help resolve these issues, many of the larger martial arts tournaments expanded to have separate divisions for hard and soft styles. This was a way to equalize things and add some more fairness to all competitors. The largest tournaments went another step ahead and further separated Japanese karate stylists from Korean tae kwon do stylists by putting them into different divisions too. This still left many kempo stylists up in the air because their particular forms have both hard and soft style elements since their movements are both linear as well as circular. Some promoters of large tournaments decided to accommodate kempo stylists by adding in separate forms divisions just for their style too. Of course many smaller local tournaments have not been able to offer separate hard and soft style divisions for martial arts forms competitors mainly because of financial budget restrictions. The terms hard style and soft style are used only in North America and parts of Europe since these are the only regions of the world that have open martial arts competitions. Martial arts competitions in other parts of the world such as Asia are generally restricted to certain specific styles only.

Fishing Tackle - Professional Tips

Fishing Tackle Guidelines

Fishing can be an extremely enjoyable and relaxing adventure. As long as you have the right tools, the fishing safety knowledge, and a little bit of support from friends or family, you could perform your fishing successfully.

However, the most overlooked factor in buying equipments is choosing the right fishing tackle. You should follow these simple guidelines in the selection of tackles.

1) You should choose the appropriate fishing flies that you would be using to catch the kind of fish you will be targeting to seize. The basic rule in choosing the kind of fly is to know which is abundant in that actual environment.

2) Once you have determined which fly to use, you should be able to choose the appropriate line to use. The three commonly used tackles are fly-fishing, plug casting and spinning. The difference between the three is that spinning and plug-casting makes use of bait as weight to drag the line from its reel to the target point of your fishing.

3) Fly lines come in four different types - weight-forward, double taper, shooting-taper and level taper. Within the four different types are numerous variations. However, once you have decided what kind of fishing wish to accomplish and what kind of fish you wish to catch, you will be using only a particular fishing line.

The fishing lines have numbers that rank from one to fifteen. However, the most common among anglers are the lines numbered from three to twelve in weight. As a basic rule for optimum catching, the first thirty feet of your line should be weighted and matched to the rod.

4) The next thing you should purchase is the rod and reel. The most suitable equipment for beginners is the spin-casting gears that is easy to operate and provides the least setbacks. For any kind of fishing, the recommended spin-casting reel is mounted on a light-action six-foot casting rod and spooled with an eight-pound test line. The reel and rod could be purchased as a package in many fishing stores. Most professional anglers prefer bait-casting and spinning tackle.

5) You would need sinkers, hooks and bobbers. Sinkers and hooks could be bought in different pack with different styles and sizes. When selecting bobbers, always keep in mind that the smaller the bobber, the better the performance. The struggling of the fish would depend on the size of your bobber.

6) Professional anglers prefer artificial lures. The recommended sizes of lures are 1/8 ounce up to ounce.

Remember that the kind of tackle would depend on the fish you prefer to catch. Avoid buying unnecessary fishing items and enjoy your affordable fishing experience.

Ness Notes Jan 4th

The first line of the AP story recapping last night’s Orange Bowl called it a “game for the ages.” What game was that reporter watching?

Did he notice the 7-0 score with just over four minutes left in the first half, before an 87-yard punt returned sparked a three-TD barrage before the break. How about the EIGHT consecutive possessions to open the second half before a team made a first down? Then, after Penn St took a 16-13 lead on a safety early in the 4th quarter, the Nittany Lions botched a snap on a 1st-and-goal at the four-yard line, losing an opportunity to go up by nine points with around eight minutes left!

Maybe he was referring to the fact that FSU had a grand total of SIX first downs before the team’s game-tying drive in the fourth quarter? By the way, FSU finished with a total of 26 yards rushing and had 129 yards in penalties. The FSU kicker missed an extra-point in the first half and two FGs in overtime (there’s something new for that school!).

As for Penn St, before kicking the game-winner in the third OT, its kicker missed a 29-yarder in regulation which would have won it and a 38-yarder in the 1st OT which also would have won the game! If that’s a “game for the ages”, let’s pray tonight’s Rose Bowl ISN’T!

Speaking of the Rose Bowl, it’s just the latest in a long line of “Games of the Century” and arguably, the biggest game since Nebraska/Oklahoma on Thanksgiving Day, 1971. If it can live up to that one, a 35-31 Nebraska win, no one will go home unsatisfied. Both teams went 12-0 this year and both average 50 PPG, making it the first time any bowl game has ever featured two teams averaging that many points.

Leinart and Bush both own Heismans and it’s also the first time in college football history that Heisman-winning teammates have lined up together in the same game. Texas’ Vince Young finished second to Reggie Bush, marking the FOURTH time in six years that a bowl game has featured both the Heisman winner and its runner-up. The list includes the 2001 Orange Bowl (Weinke-Heupel), the 2003 Orange Bowl (Palmer-Banks), the 2005 Orange Bowl (Leinart-Peterson) and now the 2006 Rose Bowl.

USC was just 6-6 ATS this year while Texas was 10-2, but the Trojans are a seven-point favorite and the total, which opened as high as 75, was down to 69 1/2, as of this morning.

The rest of Wednesday’s sports schedule includes a nine-game NBA card and a five-game NHL slate. In college hoops, 30 games are on the menu, including 11-0 Pittsburgh (one of just SIX remaining unbeaten Division I-A schools), hosting 9-2 Notre Dame.

U Conn fell from the ranks of the unbeaten last night, losing 94-79 at Marquette, as a 10-point road favorite. Illinois (14-0), Duke and Florida (both 13-0), Ohio St (10-0) and Villanova (9-0), join Pittsburgh as college basketball’s unbeatens. Pitt is favored tonight by 7 1/2 points. NFL coverage begins tomorrow.

Proper Golf Swing - One of the harder things to Master

Most beginning golfers don’t realize how much skill and technique goes into a proper golf swing. It looks so easy when you see experienced golfers or pros swing - it even sounds quite simple when the theory of the technique is explained to you. But watching it and hearing about it, and actually doing it yourself are indeed two different things!

An effective golf swing takes quite a bit of practice to perfect. People spend years working on their swing. Keep in mind that the object is to get the ball into the hole at or under par for that hole….but the swing is what determines whether that actually happens or not. Essentially, a proper golf swing determines the entire outcome of the game!

An effective golf swing is accomplished by forming a triangle with your shoulders and arms, and keeping that triangle locked in place throughout the entire swinging process. This is often easier said than done, and you will find that you lose control of the ball by slicing a great deal before you get the concept down. When you draw the club back, you do not move your arms, even though your arms are essentially moving. What you are really moving is your shoulder and your hips - without ever actually moving your arms.

There are many training aids available to help you develop a good golf swing. You should take advantage of the available technology to improve your game. There are aids that will help you keep your arms locked, as well as aids that help you keep your wrists locked. There are aids to help you correct your stance, as well as your backswing, upswing, and even the force with which you hit the ball. If you have an issue that needs to be corrected in your golf game or swing, there is a golfing aid available to help you!

Making a video tape, showing your swing from all angles will also help you improve your game. Have a friend video tape your swing. Get lots of footage on the tape, and then watch it - in slow motion. Really pay attention to every aspect of your swing, watching from your head down to your feet. Making yourself aware of the mistakes is the first step to solving them. If you know what problems exist, you will pay special attention to those areas the next time you play. With enough practice and determination, you can correct those problems.

Don’t be afraid to look funny. Looking good on the golf course is not your top priority - playing a great game of golf is what you are after. Some people have a stance that looks a little funny to others…but those same people have perfected that stance to the point where they have greatly improved their swing because of it. Some people grip the club in a funny manner. Some people play ‘natural golf’ using ‘natural golf swings.’ This form of golf does look funny to traditional golfers - but it is quite effective. Don’t be afraid of being different if it helps you play better!

Studying the swings of great golfers can be a training tool within itself. However, it is important to remember that you are an individual. While you can try many of their techniques, their exact technique probably won’t work as well for you as it does for them. Take their techniques, and work with them to make them your very own - as long as they improve your game.

You can practice your swing at home or at the office (if this is allowed). You don’t need a ball; you just need a little room. Swing the club, just as you would if you were going to hit the ball. Instead of concentrating on needing to hit the ball, however, concentrate on the actual swing. You should also consider using training clubs as well. These will build your strength a great deal, allowing you to hit the ball harder and farther than ever before!

Remember that developing a proper golf swing takes time, practice and patience. If you are having problems, do not get frustrated, or give up. Keep working at it, and look for the solution you need to correct the swing problems you have. One of these days, you will be playing like a pro!

Downhill Ski Boots — Align and Adjust

If your downhill ski boots are uncomfortable, don’t flex adequately, and/or your feet are out of alignment, your performance and technique will be adversely affected. In addition, foot comfort and alignment are critical for expert skiers, since they affect the ability to maintain a balanced stance, as well as a flat ski.

With regards to the aspiring all-terrain skier who is contemplating a new pair of boots, we’ll take a look at a number of different boot manufacturers and models in a future article. The ski boots we examine will be geared to the expert skier.

First, we need to cover the following topics:

  • Internal Alignment of the Foot
  • External Lateral Cuff Adjustment of the Lower Leg
  • External Forward Lean Adjustment of the Shin
  • External Heel Lift Adjustment of the Foot
  • External Forward Flex Adjustment of the Shin

In this way, you’ll be knowledgeable about foot alignment, lateral cuff, forward lean, heel lift, forward flex, and associated terminology when you approach your local, ski boot fitter.

Internal Alignment of the Foot

Expert skiing depends on a balanced stance, and balance begins with the feet. Foot comfort and alignment are crucial. Most skiers need specialized boot alignment to achieve a stance that allows easy balance over one foot, and one ski at a time. From the Stance Test in the first article entitled Ski Boots: Testing 1,2,3 we found that a strong, stable foot that’s properly balanced makes for a strong skier.

In addition, from the Knee Tracking Test in the same article we discovered that ideally you want your knees to track straight when you flex forward. If they don’t, it’s a sign that you need the support offered by a foot bed, which is a custom insole molded for your particular foot.

During the boot fitting process, internal foot alignment woes can be minimized or even eliminated with the help of a pair of foot beds. The top part of each bed is molded to the shape of your foot, while the bottom part of each insole is designed to keep your foot aligned within the boot so it won’t collapse.

So, with foot beds you get the best of both worlds. Foot comfort is achieved by having insoles that are molded to the shape of your feet. On the other hand, proper alignment of the feet stems from the bottom of the foot beds. When you flex forward yours knees should now track straight. With the correct internal alignment you can establish a stance that is now balanced and stable.

After the foot beds are molded, you need to remove the insoles that came with your boots and replace them with the foot beds.

External Lateral Cuff Adjustment of the Lower Leg

If you are an aspiring expert, proper alignment is essential. Put another way, a strong stable foot that’s properly balanced makes for a strong skier. From the Stance Test in the previous article we found that a slightly knock-kneed stance is considered to be the best for downhill skiing. However, too much knock is not good. In addition, all bow-legged stances make it difficult to accurately pressure the edges of your skis.

Aside from the internal foot alignment from the use of custom foot beds, most boots are equipped with dual, external, upper-cuff adjustments to help you achieve the proper alignment and establish a balanced and stable stance. The cuff adjustments allow the upper part of the boot to be shifted laterally, which compensates for the angles of the bones in the lower leg.

A knock-kneed or bow-legged person can make adjustments that are geared to his or her particular lower body. The inclination of the cuff can be adjusted toward the lateral side, as well as toward the medial side, as necessary.

External Forward Lean Adjustment of the Shin

Many of the newer boots on the market now come equipped with external devices to control the forward inclination of the shin while you ski. This adjustment is usually located on the outside of the boot near the ankle.

Control of the forward inclination of the shin will determine at what angle your leg is held within your boot. It can also be described as the amount of bend at the ankle and knee that produces a given amount of forward lean in the shin.

If you feel your boots are keeping you from establishing a neutral, athletic stance, or restricting your range of motion, you can experiment with the forward lean adjustment, providing your boots are equipped with such a device.

Although you can adjust this control yourself, it’s best to have this shaft alignment and adjustment done by a good, boot fitter. Make sure you have the forward inclination set initially by the boot fitter in the ski shop after you’ve purchased new boots. If you have any alignment problems during the season bring your boots back to the shop for a fine tuning.

External Heel Lift Adjustment of the Foot

Many of the newer boots on the market now come equipped with an external device to control the canting of the foot while you ski. The control is located on the outside either behind the heel or near the arch.

Adjustment of the heel lift in the foot will change the angle at which your foot rests in the bottom of your boot. This works to get you centered over your skis by shifting your center of mass either further ahead or further behind depending on which way the screw is turned.

However, the hell lift is not a common adjustment because not many boots are equipped with this device. If you don’t have this adjustment screw on your boots, you can insert a tapered shim to increase the angle under the foot on the inside of the boot near the back.

External Forward Flex Adjustment of the Shin

From the Ankle Flexion Test in the first article, Ski Boots: Testing 1,2,3, we discovered that if you can flex the front of your knees forward to a point between the base of your big toe and approximately one inch beyond it, you have a good range of flexion. However, if your knees stop at your instep or go way past the big toe, you need to have your boots flex-tuned for your particular lower body.

If your boots are equipped with such a device, a 2-postion flex adjustment will be located on the outside of the boot near the ankle. This control alters the amount of resistance to the forward movement of your shins due to the bending in your ankles.

An all-terrain skier who does a lot of mogul or powder skiing may need to increase the forward flex in his or her boots to make them less stiff. The skier with softer-flexing boots will adapt much better because his or her boots will work to absorb such variations in the terrain or soft snow. Therefore, much of the energy of impact is not transferred directly to the skier.

Bodybuilding: Effective Ways For Handling Criticsm

Effective Ways For Handling Criticism
By Mike Vainshtein

It’s important to set the way we’ll respond to different critics throughout the journey of achieving our personal and bodybuilding goals. As are other areas of life, Bodybuilding is a sport of opinion. When we step on that stage, or conduct our daily business, whether with associates or judges, it’s our relationships with these people, and their opinions and impressions that will determine our personal and bodybuilding successes and victories.

The more dedicated you are to your bodybuilding goals, the easier it will be to show the judges your best physique. The greater your ability in controlling and handling daily communication, the more successful you will become with people and in personal endeavors.

Yet at various instances, opinions, that we may not necessarily condone and desire to receive will come through from other people.

The levels of our flexibility in handling outside feedback will greatly determine the impressions that others hold toward us, the way we view ourselves, and the results of our goals. You see, the way we respond to events reflects whom we are within.
Thus, by developing the ability to positively respond to events and changes that occur in our life, and respond to them in a constructive matter will greatly enhance the quality of our actions, create positive impressions about who we are for ourselves and others, and enable us to rise to higher levels of quality and results.

I believe there are three forms of opinions. More precisely, there are three roots from which they manifest.
Criticism is a way of justifying one’s own weaknesses.
First are the people who are jealous and will criticize your achievements to lower you to their level, thus making themselves feel better. Those people usually accompany words like “can’t”, “impossible”, “I don’t have time”, and so forth.

Steer clear, by nodding your head with disguised agreement, as anything further would be just a waste of time.

A second scenario would involve an advice that is in our control to determine whether it is perceived as offensive or constructive.
For example, if a gym member or someone with more experience and knowledge, comments that your legs are small, avoid get offended by shouting back “Huh, do you know how hard I blast my legs, they are not small at all”. This automatic response is perfectly fine, due to the desire to avoid negative feedback, also since we don’t like to be put down. Even if we know what’s stated is right. Especially when there’s hard work involved.

Yet I believe there’s always room for growth. Always. So welcoming these types of suggestions could be even beneficial to help us excel and achieve greater results. So the next time some one criticizes your legs, say “Thanks!”, and make a note to use that as an advantages on your next leg workout.

A third opinion is a compliment. Use the compliment to appreciate your achievements, and enjoy the ride along your journey. Often times we don’t appreciate our efforts enough, and what we have achieved. Yet at the same time, avoid letting that compliment put you in ease. Continue striving for your goals, with full dedication and persistence, and you’ll achieve what you set out to do.

And remember, Be patient. Build it, and it will come.
