Trade Shows Are Not a Waste!

According to the Center for Exhibition Industry Research (the trade association for trade shows), industry spends more than $60 billion annually on trade show participation, more than the expenditures for magazines, radio and outdoor billboards combined! And, trade shows are more cost-effective than direct selling when it comes to reaching new customers.

But, despite the abundance of opportunities that trade shows provide, many executives complain that their trade show expenditures offer little return for the investment of money and time. Here are several reasons why companies fail to get the most from their trade show investment:

Lack Of Clear Goals And Objectives: Perhaps the single biggest reason for trade show failure is the lack of clear goals and objectives supporting the decision to exhibit. More often than not, the only justification that most executives can offer for their participation in a given show is “because our competition is there” or “people will wonder if we’ve gone out of business if we’re not there.” Those are pretty flimsy reasons for investments that routinely top $10,000 per show.

Exhibiting For The Wrong Reasons: Likewise, companies often have inappropriate or unrealistic expectations about what they can achieve by exhibiting at a trade show. Generally speaking, trade shows are not the most effective venues for orchestrating highly complex selling efforts, conducting formal market research or spending quality time with key accounts. On the other hand, trade shows are a great place to identify prospective customers, introduce new products, conduct informal market research or scope out new market opportunities.

Missing Unique Aspects Of Each Show: If you’ve been to more than one trade show in your life, you know that each one has a unique “personality” that differentiates it from other shows. That personality can be reflected in the type of people who attend the show, the kinds of companies that typically exhibit or the presence or absence of a technical program. But, unless that unique characteristic matches with your primary reasons for exhibiting, you’ll be wasting your time.

Seeing Trade Show Marketing As Simple: Trade show marketing is more than just shipping the booth and showing up. It requires a carefully orchestrated plan to make the most of the opportunity to get in front of prospective customers. That can mean a direct mail campaign in advance of the show, pre-scheduled appointments with important prospects or the careful development of your in-booth presentation.

Failure To Adequately Train Trade Show Staff: Nothing represents a company more poorly than booth staff that hasn’t got a clue about the business objectives behind the company’s decision to exhibit. The execution of an effective trade show strategy lies entirely with the people who are manning your booth. If you haven’t properly trained them before hand, you’re jeopardizing your entire trade show investment.

No Follow-Up On Trade Show Leads: Finally, after all of the investment made in planning and executing a trade show game plan, most companies fall down by failing to plan for immediate and consistent follow-up with customer leads generated at the show. Unfortunately, your competitors who flawlessly execute their own trade show follow-up plan will get the business.

So make your investment in trade shows really pay off by carefully planning your trade show participation. That way, you’ll get the best return for your time and money, and maybe even have some fun in the process.

Like Canaries in a Mine Shaft

They came back last week - lively little finches just beginning to show their annual caps of glorious cherry red feathers.

Their feeder stands only three feet from my office window, so they provide a relaxing break almost anytime during the day. They fuss and squabble, acting so churlish and unneighborly that I often wonder where they stuff their hostilities while they raise their young.

They’ve been a source of springtime pleasure for many years. This year they’re a source of some concern as well.

I can easily identify one of the males by the prominent cyst on the back of his head. Feathers that would normally cover his crown with bright color stick up in a weird brown little tuft. The lump with its unruly feathers has been on his head since his arrival. It shows no sign of disappearing.

My concern deepened yesterday when a female with a huge lump on the side of her face appeared on the feeder. At first, I thought it was only a sunflower seed, stuck there in the damp weather. I wondered why she did not brush it away.

This morning I could see the dark mass more clearly. No sunflower seed that she could knock off on a twig, this ugly tumor will mar her beauty from now on. If it continues to grow, it may cause her to starve.

I’m worried now. Of the two dozen or so finches who regularly visit my feeder, at least two sport abnormal growths. Almost 10%.

I ask myself what’s going on here. The most reasonable answer is that something in their environment has poisoned them. What the culprit might be I do not know. Nevertheless, I do know that if the environment is growing worse for birds, then it is also growing worse for humans.

We can no longer afford to lounge in our easy chairs, making fun of “environmentalist whackos.” We will become activists, protectionists, true conservationists, or we will not survive.

The finches, like the canary of legend, still live. Under most environmental conditions, we, as larger creatures, will probably outlive them. But for how long? And at what price?

How To Make Your Website User Friendly

The following tips will help you build a user friendly website
that generates more profit for your business:

1. Build your site to be fast loading. Eliminate the use of
large slow loading graphics, banners, or anything else that
would make your site not load quickly.

Keep in mind that most internet users will not stay on a site
that takes more than 15 or 20 seconds to load.

Limit your use of graphics to only those that add to your site’s
theme or that grab and focus your visitors’ attention on your ad
copy or promotional material.

2. Don’t ask your visitors to download anything in order to
properly view or use your site.

3. Keep your site accessible to the majority of internet users
including visitors with different browsers.

4. Rid your site of dead links. Continue to regularly check your
links to make sure they are all still working properly.

5. Keep your site easy on the eye. Eliminate the use of
endlessly scrolling pages, blinking or moving animation, and be
careful when choosing which color scheme to use for your site.

6. Keep your design and color scheme consistent throughout your
site.

7. Don’t open all of your pages in a new window. Use this option
only when linking to other people’s sites within your site’s
content to make it easy for your visitors to continue to use
your site.

8. Make your site easy to navigate. Your visitors should be able
to know, as well as you do, how to get to everything on your
site.

Include a site map, a link back home on each of your pages, make
your visited links and not visited links color different, and if
your site is large enough also include a search function.

9. If you constantly update your site with new content, make it
easy for your visitors to find the latest changes to your site
by providing them with a “What’s New Section.”

10. You can also make it easier for your visitors to find what’s
new on your site by asking them to subscribe to be notified by
email when you’ve added new content to your site.

11. Give quality support to your visitors by adding a
“Frequently Asked Questions” page to your site, providing your
email and contact information on every page of your site so that
your visitors can easily get in touch with you, and by answering
all your visitors’ inquiries in a timely and courteous manner.

What SPAM Means: “Stupid People Annoying Me”

What SPAM
Means: “Stupid People Annoying Me”

Title

—–

What SPAM Means: “Stupid People Annoying Me”

English, German, Italian - It’s All SPAM To Me

———————————————–

Has anyone else noticed the sudden blast of unsolicited e-mail
(spam) loaded with url’s for the unsuspecting and curious
Internet surfer to click on?

What’s even better, the bulk of this SPAM is in a foreign
language. I was at a neighborhood party this weekend and you
can’t imagine the number of people who asked me for assistance
with this. They have no idea what to do.

The sad fact is there are a lot of Stupid People who have
nothing better to do and can’t seem to find a better way of
making a buck than Annoying Me and everyone else subject to
their stupidity with spam. I guess that’s a little harsh. Not
really.

How Does The Average Person Deal With This

————————————–

I wrote in a previous article how bad a feel for the average
person having to deal with such things. It is increasingly
becoming a nightmare for all to deal with. For the technical
among us, it’s not as bad given that we deal with such things on
a technical level almost everyday.

Given this current flood of SPAM I thought I would post an
article I wrote quite some time ago. It’s a short article, and
may be old news for some, but I can tell you that many people
still don’t follow the basic’s when dealing with SPAM.

How You May Be Helping Spammers

———————————————-

I can’t imagine that anyone with an e-mail address has not
received unsolicited e-mail or spam in one form or another. What
do you do when you receive these types of e-mails. Do you delete
them right away, respond to them informing the sender you do not
wish to receive them, or forward them to a friend whom you think
might be interested in the information?

When the Internet as we know it was very young and most
unsolicited e-mails where either by accident or the result of
opt-in subscriptions, you could respond with the word
“unsubscribe” in the reply subject and your name was taken off
the list. That quickly changed once people found out how
powerful a marketing tool e-mail was. Now, most of the time you
respond to unsolicited e-mails you are letting the sender know
that your e-mail address is active or alive. Instead of being
taken off the list you are targeted more aggressively. The
sender of the e-mail may also sell your e-mail address to other
e-marketers, substantially increasing the number of unsolicited
e-mails your receive.

WHow Do Spammers Get My E-mail Address

—————-

Well, there are quite a few ways, but one of the ways spammers
get hold of your e-mail address is literally by guessing. For
instance, say your e-mail address is part of the domain
“-notrealdomain-.com”, and your e-mail address is
“me@-notrealdomain-.com”, the spammers have programs that will
generate thousands of combinations of names / domains i.e.
“me@-notrealdomain-.com”, “you@-notrealdomain-.com”,
“them@-notrealdomain-.com” hoping that somewhere along the line
the target e-mail address exists. It’s really not difficult to
do, since a computer can do this over and over again. If you
receive one of these e-mails and reply to it, you have just
informed the sender that they did indeed find a live address.
It’s all downhill from there.

Spoofing E-mail Addresses

———-

Another interesting tactic is to send someone an e-mail and make
it appear as if it came from your address. Have you ever
received an e-mail from someone you don’t know and don’t have in
you contact list asking you to stop sending them unsolicited
e-mails? Many people experience this problem. Basically, the
spammer made the recipient of the spam think you sent it to
them. This is called e-mail spoofing and is relatively easy to
do. The spammers use mail servers that allow something called
“mail relay.” This allows them to send e-mails from any source
address (even yours) to any target address.

Conclusion

———-

A few things to keep in mind when dealing with unsolicited
e-mails and spam:

If you are starting to receive SPAM in alternate languages,
check your e-mail client for the ability to filter / block SPAM
by specifying language types.

If you only speak English, and don’t expect to receive e-mail in
German, then block it;

If your SPAM filter downloads data from your vendor for known
SPAM sites make sure to perform and schedule the download to
happen frequently;

If you receive e-mail or spam from someone you don’t know, do
not respond to it, just delete it;

If someone informs you that they are receiving spam from your
e-mail address, inform them that it was not sent by you and most
likely came from a spammer who spoofed your address. Tell them
to just delete it;

Never give out your e-mail address unless you are sure the site
or organization will be responsible for it’s privacy;

If you are going to sign up for something like a news article or
other information, read their privacy statement, agreement, and
disclaimer before doing so; And

Review the entire privacy statement to make sure there are no
check boxes or radio buttons on by default. You never know what
you are agreeing to.

These are just a few of the things you can do to help prevent
SPAM from becoming a huge burden. You will most likely not be
able to prevent all SPAM from getting to your inbox, but you
sure can decrease the number.

Are Limiting Beliefs Keeping You From Realising Your Potential?

Don’t you love the current expression: ‘does what it says on
the can’. The can is, of course, purely metaphorical and ‘does
what it says’ suggests clarity and ultimate intelligibility.

A limiting belief, obviously, does exactly what it says on the
can: it holds people back in any and every area of their life.
Perfectly clear - or is it?

In fact, the potential problem lies in the underlying assumption
that the limiting beliefs sufferer actually believes they have
any real and unique value, gifts and qualities. Often they
don’t. That’s the nature of a limiting belief.

Women who have endured the brainwashing of an abusive
relationship don’t feel they are blessed with value, gifts and
qualities. Understandably, they tend not to feel blessed at all.
Even if they know, with their head, that they have certainly
abilities; even if friends, family and colleagues corroborate
this, they don’t really believe it. It has no bearing on their
emotional world.

“Yes, but…” they’ll say; or, “it doesn’t make me feel better
about myself”, or other words to that effect. They can’t feel
any pleasure in the good that others see in them, because they
simply don’t believe it. The only communications they can truly
receive are on the frequency of the negative beliefs that they
hold about themselves.

It’s an agonising place to be, as well as endlessly frustrating
for the people who try to support them.

Working with other women’s limiting beliefs recently took me
back to my first experience of coaching…

At first when the core question: “What’s holding you back?” came
up: I couldn’t even formulate an answer.

I thought I was doing pretty well when I eventually came up with
an answer and proudly offered it to my first coach: what was
holding me back, I said, was me.

Awareness has to start somewhere, I guess. As I now see it, I
was both right and wrong. What was holding me back was me -
inasmuch as it was not anyone else

But, equally, what was holding me back it was not me.

You see, we are not our self-limiting beliefs and our
self-limiting beliefs are not who we are. Not at all. They are,
at most, a distorting, fairground mirror, in which we glimpse a
grotesque distortion of ourselves.

I know this with my head because I’ve learned it somewhere along
my own (ongoing) journey. I believe it with my whole being
because I see it in the women I work with.

They may experience themselves as a human black hole. Regardless
of what goes into them, nothing unconditionally good will ever
come out from them. Or so they believe. They feel condemned to
sit forever on the sidelines, watching the great game of life
without ever becoming full participants.

They are like hungry, urchins, whose nose is forever pressed
against the window, They can see other people seated at the
banquet of life and they know, they just know that they’ll never
participate in that feast.

Now, that knowledge is false. They have no way of predicting the
future. Their view of their world is simply darkened by a
self-limiting belief that appears to have all the trappings of
reality. So they struggle, futilely, with a vision of the future
that is crude, pessimistic, and false. That vision that crushes
them daily.

And yet, as soon as they turn their focus away from themselves,
they are perceptive, creative, supportive, nurturing, dynamic,
multi-talented, energetic. Those qualities, and many more, are
who they truly are.

Anyone who survives an abusive relationship has actually dug
very deep and unearthed enormous personal resources and riches.

For as long as they continue to regard themselves through the
filter of self-limiting beliefs they may well remain deaf, blind
and numb to their own personal treasure. But their treasure will
continue to grow and the day will come when they are able to
claim it and rejoice in it.

How long will the process take? That depends. If you listen to
your limiting beliefs, it’ll make the seven labours of Hercules
pale into insignificance.

But if you start to challenge them, if you start to ask yourself
- or better still, get someone else to ask you: ‘Is it always
that way?’, ‘Do you never…?’ , ‘How do you know what the
future holds? Do you have special gifts?’ then you’ll start to
get some new answers and some new realizations.

You’ll find that your limiting beliefs will start to fall by the
wayside. You’ll be surprised by how much faster you can move
forward without them. And you’ll be amazed to discover just how
special and valuable you truly are.

Just Shoot Me (DVD) Review

Nominated for 7 Golden Globes and 6 Emmys, including Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, Just Shoot Me is among the top cutting-edge situation comedies of the late-1990s and early-2000s. The NBC original series is the brainchild of talented creator Steven Levitan, writer for such celebrated TV shows as Wings (1990), The Larry Sanders Show (1992), and Frasier (1993) - among others. Featuring a multitalented cast with a dearth of experience in the world of show business, Just Shoot Me is one of the funniest and best-written sitcoms of its time…

Just Shoot Me follows the exploits of an eccentric staff of professionals working in the New York offices of the fictional “Blush” magazine (similar to “Cosmo” in real life). The series begins when Maya Gallo (Laura San Giacomo), the only child of Blush magazine owner and editor Jack Gallo (George Segal), gets fired from her job as a serious journalist and picks up as a writer for Blush magazine. Aiming to make the magazine more “cerebral,” Maya is constantly butting heads with her by-the-numbers, give-the-masses-what-they-want father. Maya must also face the incessant sarcasm of Jack’s personal assistant Dennis Finch (David Spade), the constant advances of womanizing photographer Elliott DiMauro (Enrico Colantoni), and the veracious neuroses of ex-model, turned fashion editor Nina Van Horn (Wendie Malick). Together, the strange amalgam of dysfunctional characters forms a charming, witty, and often hilarious setting in which to set the world of fashion on fire…

The Just Shoot Me DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the series premiere “Back Issues” in which a recently unemployed, broke, and quite desperate Maya Gallo seeks employment from the person and company she’d least like to work for - her father at Blush magazine. Now, Maya must not only contend with her estranged father, but with numerous fellow employees who fear that her presence will diminish their own influence and prospects for advancement within the company… Other notable episodes from Seasons 1 & 2 include “Lemon Wacky Hello” in which Jack returns from China with an exotic candy for everyone in the office to try, but they realize much too late that the candy is laced with a hallucinogenic drug, and “The Kiss” in which a harmless kiss, prompted by their pretending to be married, leads to bigger things for Maya and Elliott’s relationship…
