Allergies The Silent Disease

Allergies affect approximately 60 million Americans, which means one in every five adults or children suffer from them, and are common in men as well as in women. Thirty-five million people have upper respiratory symptoms, which are allergic reactions to airborne pollen. Around 10 million Americans have allergies to cats and two million present severe reactions to various insect stings.

Food allergies are less common in the family of allergies. About one out of three people pretend to have a food allergy and only about three to eight percent of children younger than three years old, and only one percent of adults really have an allergic reactions to food. Unfortunately, food allergies are blamed for close to 200 deaths every year. Scientists say that allergies have to do with genetics. If one parent has allergies, there are 33% chances that each child will suffer from a form of allergy. If both parents are allergic, it is very much possible (seven cases out of 10) that their children will be allergic, too. If we are to discuss about allergies, we should have in view the fact that allergies usually stay with adults, while children sometimes outgrow them.

An allergy is in fact the response of your body to something that it perceives as a threat. Your body fights the allergen in the same way it would fight a virus or a bacterial infection. We can take as an example the pollens of some plants that are small and light and can be taken away by the winds for miles. Ragweed pollen has been found 400 miles out at sea and two miles up in the atmosphere.

The Difference the Right Contacts Can Make

The uniform response when quizzing people on what exactly it is that givers Peter Sutherland the winning edge is that his unique mix of great charm and directness has served him well over the course of his illustrious career. Peter Sutherland was instrumental in negotiating the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, and it has been well documented that in order to get the accord passed, he sometimes kept negotiators at the table late into the night. The deal came together after seven years of negotiations, and the very gavel he used throughout now has a prominent place on his desk in London where he serves as chairman of the arm of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. that oversees Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

In 1995 he rejoined Goldman Sachs, where he had previously worked as an adviser. Eugene Fife then head of the firm’s London office recruited him after they met on a London-to-New York flight. Former and current Goldman employees say Mr. Sutherland gave the bank a lift when it was trying to position itself in Europe.

Peter was widely recognized as being key for winning business away from London’s big merchant banks as well as European financial firms. He brought with him an impressive amount of extremely useful contacts. He is close to Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi. In more recent times he accompanied former Goldman CEO Henry Paulson on trips to Russia and China before Paulson became treasury secretary last year. Not only this, he also played an important role in forging a relationship between Goldman and Mittal Steel Co. That paid dividends when Mittal hired Goldman as lead banker in its $39 billion takeover of Arcelor SA last year. By all accounts Peter Sutherland has been instrumental in some keys bits of business which have had a massive impact on the development of Goldman.

Ephedra-based diet pills and doping

Spectacular sport performances often coexisted with equally sensational doping cases. One of the most common and popular enhancing substances was the Ephedra-based diet pill. Many sportsmen were publicly shamed, banned from their sport and left the competitive scene.
Why should athletes stay away from Ephedra pill?

Ephedrine, either as a dietary supplement, or as the Ephedra weight-loss pill, is a banned substance. Any athlete who fails the Ephedrine doping test is forever discredited. Here are the reasons why the Ephedra-based diet pill is condemned in the sports world:

* Ephedrine causes a dramatic increase in the activity of the central nervous system.
* The Ephedra energy pill has a significant stimulatory effect on cells. The athlete’s metabolism is stimulated, as more free fatty acids are produced from the breakdown of triglycerides in the adipose tissue. This is a very positive effect.
* The Ephedra pill improves the force of skeletal muscle contractions with a powerful effect on performance. It is commonly taken immediately before a competition. When administered at a certain dosage (Ephedra minimum: 25 to a maximum of 50 mg) and only for a few weeks, it has real benefits. It should not be taken at higher doses or for longer periods.

A primary symptom of Ephedrine is a higher body temperature. After few weeks of using it, this symptom disappears and the athlete will know that the substance has lost its power. A break of 2-3 months is required before it can be taken again in training sessions (not competitions). Another combination containing Ephedra is the ECA stack: ephedrina, caffeine and aspirin. Ephedrine and caffeine behave as thermogenic agents. Aspirin inhibits lipogenesis by blocking the incorporation of acetate into fatty acids. Monitoring the body temperature is suggested.

Those who use the Ephedra-based diet pill should always be aware of the unpleasant, and sometimes risky, side effects, such as:

1. tremor of hands
2. sweating
3. dizziness
4. rapid heartbeats

The diet-energy Ephedra supplement is a strong and effective stimulant which induces high performance. Its properties make it a source of great temptation for athletes who long for great sports performances. The intentional use of Ephedrine is punished by international laws, called doping-control regulations. As a general rule, sportspersons are told to avoid any product claiming to be a:

1. “fatburner” or
2. “muscle building”.

They are also advised to stay away from:

1. the black market (source of the so-called “street drugs”) and
2. unlabelled products.

A review of international anti-doping efforts

Doping may well have appeared at the same time as competitions themselves. The first Greek runners are said to have taken foreign substances in order to improve their performance during the games. Strychnine, caffeine, cocaine and alcohol have been used to enhance sports performance. The first worldwide efforts to stop doping were made in 1928. The International Amateur Athletic Federation banned the use of stimulant agents and anabolic substances such as ephedrine and amphetamine. Other federations reacted, but still no testing was imposed. Later, in 1966, the UCI (cycling) and FIFA (football) introduced doping tests in the World Championships. In 1967, the International Olympic Commmittee created a medical commission and made public a list of prohibited substances. Further drug tests were introduced at the Olympic Winter Games at Grenoble and at the Olympic Games in Mexico in 1968.

Most international sports federations are committed to drug tests. The setting up of WADA in 1999 was crucial for the anti-doping international campaign. WADA sustains and promotes fundamental values in sport. Organizations and governments joined in the effort to eliminate drugs and stimulants. The year 2004 was considered essential in the anti-doping effort, since before the Athens Olympics, the WADA Code had been implemented worldwide. This Code is to ensure that for the first time in history, the rules and regulations governing anti-doping will be the same in all sports and all countries.
Case studies

The eccentric soccer player Diego Armando Maradona is just one of the many famous sportsmen who made a contribution to the history of the Ephedra pill. When tested after a match against Nigeria at the WorldCup 1994, Maradona was found positive to Ephedrine, not allowed by FIFA. As a consequence, he was suspended from playing soccer for more than a year. The vast majority of sportsmen who fail the anti-doping test are disgraced. Besides, they have to undergo severe tests and reviews in order to return to competitions.

Each sport has its own doping control regulations applicable in any country. For instance, Doping Disqualifications and Public Warnings, according to USATF are as shown in tabel. USATF is the National Governing Body for track and field, long-distance running and race walking in the United States.

Cyberspace Sports Gambling Keeps Gamers Close to Home

Some gamers will certainly have come across the slogan “offshore sports betting”, but some are not wholly positive what that stands for exactly. An overseas betting internet site primarily operates extraneous to the authority of a particular land alternatively it could also be an world wide web based gambling website which locates its host servers in a state where machine-accessible sports gambling isn’t at this time banned. In summary then, it’s a betting web site operating extraneous to the country of the player. On-line gambling internet sites are mostly regulated by 3 assemblies. These are termed OSGA (the Offshore Gaming Association), the IGC (Interactive Gaming Council) and finally the Fidelity Trust Gaming Association (the FTGA).

Basketball Speed Starts with Stopping

Isn’t it just so obvious when you see a player that just blows by a defender that there is no mistaking speed and quickness? But, the focus may be on the wrong end of speed. Now, don’t get me wrong. First step speed and acceleration is king in the sport of basketball. The issue is; basketball isn’t just a linear sport by any means. There are stops and starts, lateral and angular cuts and deceleration, basketball require players to have great multi-directional speed.

Some of the fastest players are not the quickest. Let me explain what I mean. There are some players that can accelerate to near top end speeds in only half the courts distance, yet when they need to change direction they are slow. Why is this the case? The issue with this type of basketball player is the fact they have poor body control and techniques when it comes to deceleration. You see, they can’t control all that momentum they built up going in one direction and stop it, and re-direct it into a new direction.

Let’s cover some reasons why deceleration is used in the sport of basketball

1. Deceleration can be in the form of stopping, slowing down, or cutting. Stopping and slowing down are the actual intended act of decelerating purposely. Cutting may or may not be a purposeful act of slowing down. It just may be the fact that the cut was at a sharp enough angle it requires the athlete’s momentum to be slowed down some what, even though the hoop player is trying cut aggressively. 2. Deceleration is either a tactic or a reaction to a tactic. What this means is that if the offensive player wants to make the defender think he is stopping so he can get the defender to slow down and maybe let his guard down, and then blow by him with a quick first step acceleration. Now on the other side of the ball, the defender must decelerate as a reaction to the offensive players move. So you see deceleration isn’t always planned. 3. Obviously there are many reasons why an offensive and defense player will decelerate. The keys to doing it well are to eliminate any unwanted actions that may lengthen the deceleration more than needed or wanted, and use the deceleration in conjunction with the skills of the game of basketball. If you can’t maintain your dribble while cutting (change of direction dribble), or faking the deceleration does you no good. From a defensive perspective- if decelerating is a weak point in your movement skill, playing good hard defense will be a chore!

There are actually so many elements that get involved when breaking down deceleration that are way past the scope of this article such as; the speed going into the deceleration move, the angle at which the deceleration is being made and so on. But there are a few important biomechanical technique points I would like to cover:

1. The position of the body in regards to alignment is important. Now keep in mind that most athletes will naturally just react and perform the deceleration skill correctly, the problem comes in when there are athletes that don’t do it correctly and subject themselves to potential injuries. Even the athletes that do decelerate quickly may be doing it incorrectly, but it is a natural motor program for them due to hundreds and thousands of repeated repetition in that pattern. These are the athletes that are difficult to break old habits with. 2. I am going to start with the lower leg on deceleration. I will use the lateral shuffle or defensive slide for example. In order for the defender to be able to decelerate and stop quickly moving to his right the following things must occur. a. The right leg must be quickly positioned wide enough to stop the momentum of the body, yet not so wide that the player slips. Conversely, if the right foot is positioned to close under the hips the momentum and the weight of the upper body will cause the player to stumble or take several stutter steps to stop. b. Next, the right foot should be pointed straight ahead if not a tiny bit turned in. The ankle must also be dorsi-flexed (cocked ankle) for 2 reasons. The first is because it will close down the ankle joint and take the play out of it. This is important in reducing the rolled or sprained ankle. Secondly, the dorsi-flexed ankle creates a stretch reflex action within the muscle and tendon complex which allows for a more powerful push off if needed. The weight of the athlete should be on the balls of the feet but the heels should not be elevated for the reasons mentioned above. Keeping the foot pointed straight ahead is a more athletic position to move in any direction. c. Moving up the body. The knees need to be inside the width of the plant foot. This allows the force of the momentum to travel straight down the leg, into the foot, and into the ground on the exact angle needed to stop the body. Many people feel the foot should be over the toes when decelerating laterally; this is completely dangerous and non-conducive to greater performance. The knee lined up over the toe vertically when trying to stop horizontal forces is going to potentially cause the ankle to roll, the knee to push out laterally, and the hip to take on more forces than it should. The knee should also be pushed slightly forward helping to create the dorsi-flexed position of the ankle joint. d. To the hips we go! When decelerating laterally one the things that can cause loss of balance and slowness to recover if re-acceleration is needed, is the extreme lowering of the hips. The hips need to maintain a level height through out the movement. If they dip too much the athlete is put in a position that will require even more strength to be used just to maintain that stance. Don’t over emphasis bending the knees to an extreme. Allow the athletes to be comfortable in their stance and correct the fundamental mistakes that are slowing the movement. e. Finally, the upper body. The shoulders can be stinkers if you are not careful. There is a term that I use and it is called “Swaying”. The shoulders, not unlike trees, can have a tendency to sway to the sides, forwards, backwards, or even rotate. When this occurs during deceleration, namely stopping lateral movement, it can drastically reduce the efficiency of the skill. Especially because in most cases stopping lateral movement is simply to re-accelerate with a change of direction in the opposite direction. If the player is trying to stop a defensive shuffle to the right and quickly go to the left to stay with the ball handler, and his shoulders are still moving to the right, the quickness of the direction change will be hindered quite a bit. In order for this to not be a factor the athlete must consciously attempt to be strong with the core region, abdominal and low back, to control movement. Now, this should not be what they are thinking about when trying to stop, but during strength training this region may need to be a major focus. The body usually follows the head, so it is important for the head to stay still and eyes focused on target. If the head is bobbing and leaning to the side while attempting to stop or change direction it will negatively affect the movement skill.

Hopefully you can begin to see how much is involved with decelerating. Like I mentioned earlier; this should happen naturally for most basketball players but many will still need some coaching to make the movement more efficient and safer.

What is really important to remember is that deceleration, in my opinion, is usually the first step in accelerating in most court and field sports. This means that the athlete needs to know that stopping isn’t the major focus- change of direction is. If the body (feet, legs, hips…) are positioned correctly during the deceleration or stopping action the re-acceleration process is a continuation of that move. The athlete should be able to start the acceleration out of the same stance used to stop or decelerate. If this is not the case the athlete is going to always be slower in acceleration and in sport.

I certainly hope this help to open some eyes as to the importance of deceleration and its impact on court speed and the basketball player! Please contact me at lee@sportsspeedetc.com if you have any questions.

Golf for Inspiration

You might be tempted to ask what golf has to do with inspiration. The inspiration in golf, for me, comes from playing it. It is a microcosm of life. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Every shot you take can either be a success or a failure. Each shot you play results in the next shot you have to play. Each shot a result of the shots up to this moment. You can love it (fairways) or you can hate it (out-of-bounds) or you can lie in all the grey areas in between (rough, sand, water).

It is said that once you know the basics of golf, the game is 90% mental. And so it is with life. If you think you can make the shot, you probably will. If you think you can’t, you’re right as well. To become a better player, you must learn what you can and can’t do. And if there are shots that you can’t make right now, practice them until you believe you can do it.

Most golfers will remember the best round they ever played. I’m no different: it was a round of 84 (at handicap of 18) on a par 72 course. And if I must say it myself, I played darn well! And so many of us relive the glory days. Instead of moving on and continually striving to improve, we just sit around and talk about the good old days.

But life, like golf, can and should be so much more than a good memory. Don’t ever stop and think that the best is behind you. Play every shot as if it is your last. Play every shot to the best of your ability. Accept that mistakes are part of the game, but don’t dwell on them. And remember that you aren’t playing alone, so do make a stop on the 19th hole.

Don’t be so focused on your own game that you don’t notice the good shots of your fellow players. Compliment and encourage them to play the game as it should and could be played. Try to forget about the things outside of the here and now. Focus on one shot at a time. Don’t just play on one course all your life. Get out of your comfort zone and go and see the scenery (hopefully not the bush and the sand and the water) on other courses. Learn from those more skilled than you are and if they are willing to learn, those less skilled than yourself.

We try to avoid the obstacles that are presented to us (sand, water, etc.) but once in a while - sometime more often than not - we have to face them. And how you face them tells something about your character. You could cheat, you could go for an impossible shot or you can go for safety. Whichever way you choose to go, remember that it is only you that will have to live with it. So make your choice something worthwhile.

So whether you are playing the best or the worst round of your life, do it in courage and truth. Courage to believe that you can always enjoy the game and truth so that you may know that whatever the result is, you are important in the big scheme of things. May your golf and your life hold fairways and greens and once in a while a hazard, just to mould your character!

Benefits of Choosing an Online Fitness Program

Benefits of Choosing an Online Fitness Program
http://www.popularfitness.com

There are many benefits of choosing an online fitness program over a live personal trainer. In this article, I will focus on the most important ones. I will also mention and recommend Global Health and Fitness’ online fitness program ( http://www.popularfitness.com/global-fitness.html ) because in my opinion they are the leaders in this field on the web. Not only have they been online since 1997, more importantly they have helped hundreds of people over the years achieve their fitness goals, they are associated with many well-known fitness-related professionals and they have also been featured in numerous fitness articles.

Convenience.

The best thing about the Internet is that information is available when and where you want it - it is interactive and dynamic. These are the reasons why the Internet is ideal for a fitness program and trainers. A true personal trainer that has come of age and that is accessible from your home or office almost any time of the day. Most people cannot afford to have a trainer to offer them guidance and support whenever they need it. With online fitness programs you can receive advice almost any time of the day. Got a question that pops in your head while your at work? You can email the fitness program and receive a prompt reply. Something live personal trainers just cannot do.

Inexpensive and extensive area of expertise.

Most live trainers specialize in general fitness only whereas Global’s fitness program includes 30 highly qualified professionals from every fitness-related field. Not only do you receive help with your workouts, but you will receive nutrition advice, injury and rehabilitation training help for a specific sporting event or competition, your medical questions answered, motivational help and more. This is all available at a fraction of the cost that a personal trainer would charge who is limited in knowledge to only his or her field of expertise.

Golf Training Exercises You Need To Improve Your Game Are Very Simple

Golf training and conditioning exercises are not as difficult as most people think they are.

It is important to understand that these exercises are very different from many of the rigorous exercises that you will often see athletes using to condition their bodies and stay in shape.

For example golf training exercises using weights are not designed to built bulky muscles. Usually much lighter weights will be used and will be lifted more times as opposed to normal muscle-building training which will involve much heavier weights being lifted fewer times. The muscle-building exercises will also call for longer hours of exercises daily. Golf training exercises will usually take very little time.

What is more is that many golf training stretch exercises can easily be carried out in your office, while still seated at your desk or work station. This means that even if you have the sort of schedule that leaves you with practically no time to spare, you can still find the time to put in some serious golf training exercises that will take your game of golf to another level that you have never known before.

There is plenty more evidence that golf training exercises are not as rigorous and difficult as some would want to believe. For example in my golf training exercise programs I have worked with very young and very old golfers with the same success. Youngsters will have difficulties taking in extremely rigorous exercises and so will senior citizens.

Golf training exercises are not designed to help prepare you for a record-breaking 100 meter dash down the track. Or for an Olympic gold medal in weight-lifting or gymnastics. The training schedule for these accomplishments naturally require lots of will power and discipline to even start.

Instead golf training exercises are usually very specific and are designed to impact particular aspects of your golf game.

Using Internet To Make Phone Calls

Voice over Internet Protocol, short for VoIP refers to the transmission of voice traffic over Internet Protocol (IP) based network. It is a category of both software and hardware that allows people to make use of the Internet.

This means that the calls that go over the Internet are traveling over privately controlled data networks that are using IP rather than by traditional circuit transmission to transfer the calls from one site to the other using a carrier system interface. They are then sent over the public controlled telephone network.

Making use of a VoIP call is just as creating a normal touch tone telephone and dial the normal phone number any time you wanted to. The person on the other line will not even notice whether you are calling on a VoIP phone or just an ordinary telephone. The main difference is that the phone calls that the VoIP uses travels over the Internet rather than through the local company’s wires.

Communicating with the Voice over Internet Protocol came to pass in February 1995. Vocaltec, Inc. initiated its Internet Phone software. The call originated on a 486/33-MHZ (higher) personal computer and telephone. It is equipped with a sound card, speakers, microphone and modem. This determines what type of software or hardware is needed to initiate and complete a call. The software reduced the voice signal and converted it into IP pockets for broadcast over the Internet.

How does VoIP work?

VoIP sends a voice signal to a remote destination. To make it happen, you have to digitize it with an Analog to Digital Converter (ADC). Transmit it and transform it again in analog format with Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) to simply use it. This is essentially how VoIP works. It sends calls over the Internet or any other Internet Protocol (IP) network by simply changing voice traffic into data packets.

The advantage

There are advantages in using VoIP. One major advantage is that it avoids tolls charged by ordinary telephone service. You can talk to the person you want to talk to, as long as you want without paying for the time.

In short, you can talk with many people all at the same time. You can also share datas with people you are talking to with, send them images, graphics, tones, videos and many more. Having lower operating costs due to reduced hardware requirements more resourceful network infrastructure. Lower cost structures allow us to offer lower rates of call compared to a traditional telephone line.

The serious dilemma

VoIP function and services involve data transfer. An interactive data voice call takes place every time you make some calls. You still have to wait for few seconds to hear if the other side of the line answered it already. This is not best appropriate for this principle. Recent development occurred that they are making adjustments or taking place of the flow of voice signals in an improved manner. But still, respect to the quality of traditional telephone lines should take place in this matter.

All of us wants to have high quality phone calls with high accessibility at a low cost rate and an Internet connection that charges using a flat rate monthly fee structure. With the technology that is present nowadays, that is not a problem anymore.
